POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Eight Marist Athletics programs will be in action in the weekend to come. Teams will travel from Baltimore to Boston to compete in races, matches, and tournaments.
The Marist men's soccer team will take their second two-game road trip of the season this weekend, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. and Lawrenceville, N.J. to face #8 Loyola and Rider in conference matches. The Red Foxes enter the weekend with a record of 3-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
On Sunday afternoon, Marist will turn their attention to Rider (1-9-2, 0-2 MAAC). Their first and only win of the season came in their first match against Robert Morris on Aug. 29, a 2-1 triumph. Most recently they dropped a 7-1 decision at Niagara to wrap-up a road trip in western New York, after falling 3-0 at Canisius on Fri. Oct. 12.
Kick-off in Baltimore is set for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, while Sunday's match will start at 2 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
The Marist women's soccer team will return to MAAC play this weekend. The team will play home games against Fairfield and Iona at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
The Stags are ranked third in the Northeast Region in the latest edition of SoccerBuzz Magazine. Nine different players have scored goals for Fairfield, and are led by senior midfielder Ahna Johnson who has eight goals. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
On Sunday at 1 p.m. Marist will host Iona at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Gaels enter the weekend with a record of 2-13 overall and 1-3 in MAAC play. Before their arrival in Poughkeepsie, Iona will face Siena on Friday afternoon in Loudonville, N.Y. The Gaels have a road record of 1-8 so far in 2008, and have been outscored by their opponents 31-8 this season. The match will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Foxes women's volleyball team will see two teams they already met with in the 2008 season. On Saturday, Oct. 18, Marist will host Manhattan. When the teams met in Riverdale, N.Y., the Jaspers swept the Red Foxes in a 3-0 decision. On Sunday, Oct. 19 Marist will take to the road to face Saint Peter's. When the teams met in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 28, Marist came back to force a fifth set after being down 2-0; however, in the deciding set, Saint Peter's prevailed 15-12 to take the match.
Under the direction of 32nd season head coach Larry VanWagner, the men's and women's swimming and diving team will open the 2008-09 season this weekend at West Point, N.Y. The teams will compete in the Black Knight Invitational, with Syracuse and Army included in the weekend meet. On Friday, Oct. 17, the meet will commence at 4 p.m., with races resuming on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The men's tennis team has enjoyed a strong fall season and will look to continue their impressive ways this weekend at Yale University. The Bulldogs will host the ITA Regional Tournament all weekend. After this weekend, the team will play in one more tournament before they get set for the traditional spring season.
Marist men's and women's cross country return to action on Saturday at the UAlbany Invitational. This will be the final meet for the Red Foxes before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Also in action this weekend are the men's and women's crew teams. The rowing program is led by Tom Sanford. He will bring his two squads to the Charles River in Boston, Mass. to race in the Head of the Charles. The race will take place over two days, Saturday Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19.
