Red Foxes Defend Home Court, Defeat Manhattan 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team came back from a set down to defeat Manhattan 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16) at the McCann Center on Saturday. The Red Foxes' defense shined in the last three sets, holding the Jaspers to a .063 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) had a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs.

Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) also had a big match offensively. The sophomore tallied 15 kills and hit .345 for the match. Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) also had double-figure kills with 11. Setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had 41 assists and seven digs. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) led the Red Foxes with a career-high 23 digs. Schmid and Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) each had three blocks.

Marist (9-13, 4-5 MAAC) jumped out to a fast start in the first set, running off five straight points on Campbell's serve to take a 6-1 lead. Manhattan wouldn't go away easily and battled back to take the lead at 14-13 with consecutive kills from Jaci Rahey. The Jaspers did not look back from there as a 5-0 run gave them a 22-18 lead. Manhattan took the set 25-21 by hitting .270 with 14 kills as a team.

Manhattan (5-13, 4-5 MAAC) kept the momentum in the second set, opening up a 7-3 lead early. Trailing 17-11, a Foss kill jumpstarted a 5-0 that got the Red Foxes within one point at 17-16. Marist came back and tied the set at 20-20 with a kill by Schultze. The Red Foxes kept rolling from there, as a block by Burton and Foss highlighted a three-point run to put them ahead 23-20. Marist took the second set 25-21 on a Foss kill.

The Red Foxes and Jaspers battled to an 8-8 tie early in the third set. Manhattan took an 11-8 lead off of the serve of Bridget Call. Marist answered with a four-point run to take the lead, 12-11. The Red Foxes grew the advantage to seven, 21-15, as a Foss service ace highlighted a 5-0 run. For the second straight set, Foss sealed the deal with a kill to give Marist the third set 25-20 and a 2-1 advantage.

After playing to a 10-10 tie to start the fourth set, Marist opened up a three-point lead at 16-13 with a Schmid kill. Manhattan stayed within reach, as a Rita Welsh kill got the Jaspers within two at 18-16. That would be the last point Manhattan would score in the match. Marist took the serve back with a block by Burton and Schaefer. In the last six points, the Red Foxes got two kills from Schaefer, one from Schmid, and a Burton service ace to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-1. Marist held Manhattan to a .000 hitting percentage in the deciding set.

Marist outhit Manhattan .169-.115 in the match and held a 65-54 advantage in digs. The Jaspers held a 9.0-7.0 block advantage. Rahey led Manhattan with 12 kills with Sherryta Stokes adding 11. Setter Alyssa Getzel had 31 assists as libero Diane Strutner had 18 digs to lead the Jaspers.

The Red Foxes will go on the road Sunday to take on Saint Peter's. First serve at the Yanitelli Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
