POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team fell to the Iona Gaels (3-14, 2-4 MAAC) 2-1 on a brisk Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Despite the loss, the Red Foxes out shot the Gaels, 21-8 in the contest. Marist junior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) took six shots for the home team.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute when junior Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.) took a pass from Fox, and Lauterborn put the ball into the far side of the net beyond the reach of Gaels goalkeeper Kelly Mahoney. The goal was her first of the season, as well as Fox's first assist of the season.
Marist continued to get chances to expand their lead behind four shots, two of which went on goal, but were saved by the Gaels goalie. Fox and junior Mallory Inglese (Levittown, N.Y.) were credited with shots on goal in the stretch.
Iona then answered the Marist goal with two of their own in the 53rd and 69th minutes respectively to take a 2-1 lead.
In the 89th minute, the Red Foxes had a final chance to tie the score when the team was awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Kassandra Palmer (Washington, N.J.) took the corner, and after a short scramble, freshman Kathryn Hannis (Blommsbury, N.J.) hit a shot on the ground that was saved by the Iona defense.
The Marist women's soccer team will take to the road on Friday Oct. 24, when the team will face Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
