JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist volleyball team concluded a weekend sweep by defeating Saint Peter's 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-10) at the Yanitelli Center on Sunday. The Red Foxes hit .342 in the match and held the Peahens to a .129 hitting percentage. Four Red Foxes hit .250 or better in the match, led by Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) who hit .429 with 14 kills.
Senior Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) had an impressive day, tallying 10 kills with no errors and hit .667. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) led Marist with 17 digs.
Marist (10-13, 5-5 MAAC) led the entire way in the first set. The Red Foxes opened up a 12-6 lead early in the set, highlighted by a four-point run that included kills by Burton, Schultze, and Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas). The advantage grew to eight as a Foss kill made the score 20-12. Three straight kills by Schultze gave Marist a 23-12 lead. Marist took the set 25-13 as a Schmid service ace sealed the set. The Red Foxes hit .615 with 18 kills to only two errors.
Saint Peter's (11-13, 5-5 MAAC) bounced back in the second set, taking an early 6-5 lead on a Kelly Blanchfield kill. A kill by Schultze tied the set at six, and two kills by Schaefer and a kill by Foss gave the Red Foxes a 9-6 lead. The Peahens evened the set at 11-11 on a Yomi Angulo service ace, and eventually took an 18-15 lead on a Blanchfield block and a Stephanie Phillips kill. Marist tied the set at 22-22 with a block by Schultze and Burton. The Red Foxes earned the first set point of the match when a Schultze kill gave them a 24-22 lead but Kim Mendoza tallied a kill to make the score 24-23. With the set tied at 24-24, Schultze and Burton had back to back kills to take the set 26-24.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set on kills by Foss and Burton. Saint Peter's got within a point at 7-6, but Marist took the next six points to go ahead 13-6. The Red Foxes extended the lead to 11 at 20-9 with consecutive kills by Schaefer. A Phillips kill got the Peahens within 10 at 20-10 and that would be the last point Saint Peter's would score. Marist ended the set on a 5-0 run, started by a Burton kill and ended with a Campbell service ace.
For the match, Marist outhit Saint Peter's .342-.129. The Red Foxes also held advantages in digs 56-45, and in blocks 7.0-3.0. Phillips led the Peahens with 10 kills with Kim Mendoza adding seven. Mendoza also had 10 digs.
Marist starts a four game homestand on Saturday, October 25 against Canisius. First serve at the McCann Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
