POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team played their final home game of the 2008 season on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field against Niagara. Despite a goal in the final minute of play, the Red Foxes fell 3-2 to the Purple Eagles.
Niagara opened the scoring early with goals in the seventh and ninth minutes for a 2-0 lead. The first Purple Eagles goal came off a free kick by Levi Tesch, that beat Marist freshman goalkeeper Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.). At halftime, the Red Foxes trailed, 2-0.
In the second half, Marist came out with new life. In the 59th minute, freshman Caleb Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) scored his first goal of the season. Shaw received a cross from senior Chris Nacca (Rochester, N.Y.) and headed the ball into the goal for his first collegiate marker. The assist was Nacca's second of the season.
After Niagara scored their third goal, in the 82nd minute, sophomore Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) responded in the 90th minute with a tally of his own. Touloumis buried his fourth goal of the season on an assist from freshman Troy Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.).
Defensively, the Red Foxes sophomore Tom DeBenedetto (Paramus, N.J.) made five saves after he replaced Kessler in goal in the 14th minute of the match.
Prior to the match, Nacca, Luis Andre (Matawan, N.J.) and Marcelo del Rio (Glendale, N.Y.) were honored as a part of Senior Day. The three all played during the last home match of their careers.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. when Marist travels to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on the Siena Saints.
