JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist women's soccer team completed its first weekend sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foes this weekend. On Sunday afternoon, the Red Foxes triumphed over the Saint Peter's Peahens 2-1 on the road.
The Red Foxes opened the game with an offensive surge by sophomore Kassandra Palmer (Washington, N.J.) and freshman Kathryn Hannis (Ringwood, N.J.). Each had a shot in the first three minutes of the match. In th sixth minute, the two would connect when Palmer found Hannis five yards from the net. Hannis finished the play, as she put the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
Marist took the lead for good in the 83rd minute when Palmer found Hannis off a Marist corner kick. Hannis' second goal of the game was the game-winner.
The Peahens earned a corner kick in the 90th minute; however, the Red Foxes defense was able to hold the home team without a shot in the waning seconds of the match.
The Red Foxes offense had a stronger day, as they outshot the Peahens 15-9, and held an edge in corner kicks, 5-3.
Defensively, Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) earned her fourth win of the season, while she improved her record to 4-5. Balzarini made six saves for Marist in the win.
With the win, the Red Foxes improved to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. when they face the Loyola Greyhounds. Last season, the two teams met in the MAAC Championship game at Marist College.
