Marist Closes Season With Five Set Loss At Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team closed out the 2008 season on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss (25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 24-26, 12-15) at Iona. Junior setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) broke her own single-season assists record in the match, tallying a double-double of 56 assists and 17 digs. For the 2008 season Jan had 1,272 assists, 46 more than her record-setting season a year ago.

Sophomore Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) led the Marist offense with 19 kills and hit .333. Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) had a career-high 29 digs. Marist ends the season 14-17 with a 9-9 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Red Foxes' nine wins in conference are the most for the team since joining the MAAC in 1997.

The Red Foxes and Gaels traded points to open the match, playing to a 5-5 tie. Marist took the lead at 6-5 on a kill by Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas). Campbell followed that with a service ace to give the Red Foxes a two-point lead at 7-5. The Red Foxes took their largest lead of the set at 13-7 when Schmid and Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) blocked Iona's Rachel Whitten. Iona came back with a 5-0 run to get within one point, 13-12. Schaefer put down a kill to get Marist back up two, 14-12. Marist led the rest of the way, as a Schmid service ace locked up a 25-22 win for the Red Foxes.

Marist took an early 6-4 lead in the second set when Schultze and Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) blocked Sarah Wiener. Iona, however, came back and tied the set at 7-7. Ahead 10-9, Marist ran off six straight points to go ahead 16-9 with kills by Foss, Burke, and Schaefer. The Red Foxes took their largest lead of the set at 19-11 with a Jan kill. Marist's defense kept the Iona hitters in check in the second set, holding them to a .000 hitting percentage. Marist won the second set 25-16 on a Campbell kill and went ahead 2-0.

Iona came back on fire in the third set, hitting a match-high .393 to win the set 25-14. Marist bounced back from the loss in the third by going ahead 6-1 to start the fourth set. The Gaels, though, came back and took the lead 8-7 on a block by Alyssa Erickson and Rachelle Wilson. The two teams traded points until 12-12 when Colleen Genett put Iona ahead by one, 13-12.

The Gaels extended the lead to four at 17-13 on a block by Wilson and Molly O'Shea. Marist came back to tie the set at 20-20. Back-to-back kills by Schmid then gave the Red Foxes a 22-20 lead. A Schultze kill gave Marist a set point opportunity at 24-22. Genett put down a kill on the next point to make the score 24-23. Wiener then had a kill to tie the set at 24-24. The Gaels then took the set 26-24 on a block by Wiener and Wilson as well as a kill by O'Shea.

With the match tied at two sets apiece, Iona took the early momentum in the fifth set by going ahead 4-1. Marist fought back to 6-5 on a Foss kill. The Gaels then extended the lead back to three at 8-5 with a Wilson kill. Behind 12-9, Schmid put down a kill to make the score 12-10. Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) then had a service ace to get Marist within one, 12-11. Iona then got a side out on a Wiener kill to make the score 13-11. The Gaels won the fifth set 15-12 on a block by Wilson and Wiener to win the match 3-2.

Iona held a .210-.169 hitting advantage in the match. The Gaels also held a 17.5-5.0 blocks edge. Marist had the edge in digs 85-78. Wilson led Iona with 13 kills, hitting .346 with a match-high 12 blocks. Wiener added 12 kills and six blocks. Libero Allison Nieters led all players with 35 digs.
