Marist Falls In Home Opener To St. Bonaventure

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team dropped its home opener on Monday, suffering a 77-54 defeat at the hands of St. Bonaventure in a Garden State Challenge contest. The Red Foxes were led by red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who finished with team highs of 16 points and eight rebounds.

Red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored in double digits for the second straight game, finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Williams shot 5-for-6 from the field in a career-high 22 minutes.

The Red Foxes held the lead just once in the game, when Williams converted a layup just five seconds into the contest. With the score tied at 10 apiece and 13:12 remaining in the first half, a three-pointer by St. Bonaventure's Chris Matthews gave the Bonnies a lead they would not relinquish. Shortly thereafter, the Bonnies embarked on a 10-2 run as they took a 10-point halftime lead.

With 18:23 left to play, a layup by red-shirt junior guard Javon Parris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) cut St. Bonaventure's lead to eight at 40-32. However, on the ensuing next possession, a three-pointer by Tyler Benson put St. Bonaventure up 11, and the Bonnies led by double digits the rest of the way. St. Bonaventure led by as much as 27 before cruising to the 23-point victory.

Chris Matthews led St. Bonaventure with 21 points, going 5-for-6 from three-point range. Andrew Nicholson had 13 points and five blocked shots, and Jonathan Hall totaled 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Marist shot just .333 (19-for-57) from the field and .235 (4-for-17) from three-point range. The Red Foxes also committed 24 turnovers. St. Bonaventure shot .477 from the field, including a .531 clip in the second half. The Bonnies shot 8-for-10 from three-point range.

Marist fell to 0-2, while St. Bonaventure improved to 2-0. The Red Foxes will resume play in the Garden State Challenge on Saturday, when Marist faces Robert Morris at 5:30 p.m. in a game played at Rutgers.
