POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind two goals from freshman Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.), the Marist women's soccer team won their final game of the season, as they defeated Rider 3-2 on Sunday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes had a 3-0 lead, before the Broncs attempted a come back that fell short.
Freshman Daniella Burns (Holbrook, N.Y.) opened the scoring for Marist in the 41st minute. Burns headed a cross from sophomore Amy Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.). The goal was Burns' second of the season.
Less than four minutes later, Hannis struck with her first goal in the 45th minute. After Hannis received a cross from junior Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.), she took a shot that deflected off the cross bar and into the goal. Marist took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the opening stages of the second half, senior Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was fouled in the box. She took the ensuing penalty kick, but missed the opportunity high.
Hannis struck again in the 68th minute, after she collected a ball that hit off the post by Case, and then Hannis finished by putting the ball past Rider goalkeeper Alex Post. Her second goal proved to be the game-winner, and it was her second two goal game of the season.
Senior Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) got the win in goal for Marist. Her record improved to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made four saves in goal as she also played for some of the match.
Marist ends the 2008 season with a record of 5-14 and 3-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Red Foxes won three of their final four matches of the season as they defeated Manhattan, Saint Peter's and Rider.
