BOSTON, MASS. - In a night full of career milestones, the Marist women's basketball team routed Northeastern 93-65 at Solomon Court in Boston. With the win head coach Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored a career-high 36 points, coming up one point shy of tying the Marist single-game record.
Fitz was 15-17 from the field, including her first career three-pointer, and made all five of her free throws. Her 15 made field goals ties the program's single-game record, set four times before. Fitz was 7-for-7 from the field in the second half. Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Élise Caron (Quebec, Canada) each scored nine points and combined for nine assists. Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) had eight points and tied a career-high with five assists.
Marist (2-0) jumped out to a 10-4 lead 5:02 into the game on two Fitz jumpers on threes from Viani and Allenspach. After a Kim Carr layup got Northeastern to within four, 12-8 with 14:21 to go in the first half, Sarah Huff (Canal Winchester, Ohio) hit a jumper that sparked a 13-0 run to put Marist ahead 25-8 with 10:54 left in the half. The Red Foxes grew the lead to 20 with 5:56 left on a Maria Laterza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup. Marist had their largest lead of the half when Corielle Yarde (Leesport, Pa.) put in a layup at the end of the half to make the score 52-24.
The Red Foxes opened up the second half on an 8-0 run capped by a Fitz layup to go ahead 60-24 with 18:09 left in the game. The 36 point lead was Marist's largest of the game. Marist was unstoppable all night, shooting 53.6% from the field and making all 11 free throws to win 93-65.
For the game, Marist shot 55.6% from the field and 94.1% from the free throw line. Northeastern (0-3) shot 39.1% from the field and was held to 20.7% from the three-point line. The Red Foxes held a 43-28 rebounding edge and assisted on 26 of their 35 field goals. Kim Carr led the Huskies with 21 points and eight rebounds.
The Red Foxes continue their current road trip on Sunday at Harvard. Tip-off at Lavietes Pavilion is set for 2 p.m.
