CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - Powered by an 18-0 run to start the second half, the Marist women's basketball team defeated Harvard on Sunday 76-63 at Lavietes Pavilion. Senior guard Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led all scorers with 19 points and also had a career-high nine assists and five steals. In the second half, Viani scored her1,000th career point to become the 16th Red Fox to reach that mark.
Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored in double-figures for the 37th straight game, putting in 18 points and six rebounds. The junior forward was 8-for-12 at the free throw line. Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line on her way to a 15-point, eight-rebound performance. Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) was the fourth Marist player to score in double figures, scoring 10 points.
Marist (3-0) got behind 4-0 early on baskets by Harvard's Emma Markley and Katie Rollins. The Red Foxes responded with nine straight points, kicked off by a Viani layup. A Maria Laterza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) jumper put Marist ahead by six, 12-6, with 13:20 to go in the half. Harvard got within two, 13-11, on a pair of Claire Wheeler free throws with 9:35 left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the half, but a Allenspach jumper and Johnson three-pointer gave the Red Foxes a 29-22 lead with 1:06 left in the half. Harvard scored the last points of the period with an Emily Tay jumper to make the score 29-24.
The Red Foxes opened up the second half by attacking the basket early. Allenspach drew a Markley foul and turned that into two free throws. After a missed three by the Crimson's Brogan Berry, Viani scored on a layup to make the score 33-24. Marist then took its first double-digit lead with 18:18 left in the game on a Viani jumper in the lane. Viani then got a steal and fed Élise Caron (Quebec, Canada) for a three-pointer to put the Red Foxes ahead by 14, 38-24, with 17:56 left. Following threes by Viani and Allenspach, Fitz capped the 18-0 run with a layup to put Marist ahead by 23 with 15:06 to go in the game. Viani scored her 1,000th career point on a jumper in the lane with 6:57 to go in the game. Harvard got to within 13 late in the half, and that would be as close as the Crimson would get.
Marist shot 48.1% from the field in Sunday's win. The Red Foxes took a season-high 30 free throws, making 22. Harvard (2-2) shot 40.7% from the field and outrebounded the Red Foxes 35-32. Marist held a 32-24 advantage in points in the paint and scored 21 points off of 22 Harvard turnovers. Markley led the Crimson with 14 points and eight rebounds. Berry added 13 points and five assists, while Jackie Alemany put in 10 points off the bench.
Marist continues its current road trip on Wednesday when the Red Foxes take on #2/4 Oklahoma in Norman. Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
