Delaware Tops Marist In OT

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 88-83 loss to Delaware in overtime on Sunday in the Red Foxes' final game in the Garden State Challenge on Sunday. Red-shirt junior point guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) finished with a career-high 21 points and seven assists as he played the full 45 minutes.

Sophomore forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Schneider shot 4-for-5 from three-point range. Freshman guard R.J. Hall (Bloomfield, N.J.) came off the bench to score 14 points for the second straight game. Red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished with seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

The game included eight lead changes and eight ties. Back-to-back baskets by Hall gave Marist an 11-point lead with 5:07 left in the first half at 28-17, which was the largest lead the Red Foxes would have. Marist took a 33-27 lead into halftime, but Delaware started the second half on a 14-3 run to take a 41-36 lead with 16:37 to play. However, the Red Foxes answered the Blue Hens' run with a 12-2 spurt to take a five-point lead of their own with 13 minutes to play.

With 3:02 to play, Delaware took a 70-69 lead on a three-point play by Alphonso Dawson. The Red Foxes took the lead back two possessions later, when a three-pointer by red-shirt junior guard Javon Parris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put the Red Foxes up 72-70. However, a basket by Dawson tied the score at 72 apiece with 34 seconds to play. The Red Foxes were unable to convert on two scoring chances in the final seconds, sending the contest to overtime.

Delaware outscored Marist 16-11 in overtime, and the Red Foxes never led in the extra period. With 3:57 to play, a layup by Egerson gave the Blue Hens the lead for good.

Delaware's Jawan Carter led all scorers with 30 points. Carter shot 16-for-18 from the line, and all of his free-throw attempts came after halftime. He shot 6-for-6 from the line in overtime. Dawson and Egerson finished with 25 and 23 points, respectively.

The Red Foxes committed 31 fouls to Delaware's 17. Hall, Parris and red-shirt sophomore guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) all fouled out for the Red Foxes within the final 4:25 of regulation.

Marist outrebounded Delaware 43-40. The Red Foxes hit a season-high 13 three-pointers.

Delaware now stands at 2-2, while the Red Foxes fell to 1-3. The teams will meet again on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Delaware. Marist will return to action this Saturday, when the Red Foxes host New Hampshire on Saturday at the McCann Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
