Red Foxes Fall To Fairfield 3-1

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Marist volleyball team lost its second straight match on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-1 (17-25, 14-25, 27-25, 15-25) at Fairfield. The loss moves the Red Foxes to 8-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Junior setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had a double-double with 28 assists and a team-high 12 digs.

Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) added 11 kills, while Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) had seven kills. Libero Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) had 11 digs in the match with Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) adding 10.

Fairfield (16-12, 13-2 MAAC) and Marist traded points to start the match, playing to a 6-6 tie. A Karlie Urbaniak kill gave the Stags a 7-6 lead, and a Marist error and Alex Lopez service ace grew the lead to three. Ahead 19-15, Katie Mann put down a kill to spark a 6-2 run that would give Fairfield the first set 25-17. The Stags hit .522 in the first set while holding Marist to .103.

The Stags dominated the second set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Marist closed to within four at 905 on a Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) service ace. Alex Lopez answered with a kill for Fairfield to make the score 10-5. The Stags then ran off five straight points off of Lauren Balmert's serve to go ahead by 10, 15-5. Fairfield kept the lead in double-digits the rest of the way, winning the set 25-14.

Marist (13-15, 8-6 MAAC) took the first four points in the third set and held on to lead 9-5 on a Jan solo block. Fairfield came back and tied the set at 11-11 with a kill by Mann. The Red Foxes and Stags traded points to get to 18-18. Fairfield opened up a two-point lead at 20-18 with kills by Lopez and Kendal Dirkin. Marist, then, ran off four straight points, highlighted by two Foss service aces, to go ahead 22-20. The Red Foxes had a set point opportunity at 24-21 but an error kept Fairfield in the set. The Stags tied the set at 24-24 with a Lauren Hughes kill. Marist earned another set point opportunity at 25-24 with a Schultze kill, but Mann put down a kill for Fairfield to tie the set at 25-25. The Red Foxes won the set 27-25 on kills by Schultze and Schmid.

The Red Foxes had an early 3-2 lead in the fourth, but Fairfield would come back in a hurry. The Stags went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 7-3. Fairfield's lead grew to six at 13-7 with a Balmert service ace. Marist got to within three at 13-10 on a Campbell kill but that would be as close as the Red Foxes would get in the fourth set. The Stags hit .419 in the deciding set and held Marist to a .086 hitting percentage and took the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

Fairfield outhit Marist .297-.098 in the match and also held a 7.0-4.0 advantage in blocks. Katie Mann led all players with 15 kills, hitting .600 for the match with no errors. Karlie Urbaniak had 10 kills, while Alex Lopez had nine. Lauren Balmert had 38 assists while libero Brandi Higa had 15 digs.

Marist continues its weekend road trip on Sunday at Rider. First serve at Alumni Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m.
