POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Red-shirt sophomore guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) hit a jumper with 1.4 seconds remaining, giving the Marist men's basketball team a 51-50 victory over Iona in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Friday at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes trailed by four with 27 seconds to go, but scored the last five points of the game to pull out the victory.

After leading for much of the game, the Red Foxes trailed by five - their largest deficit of the game - when Iona's Devon Clarke converted a three-point play with 2:11 remaining to give the Gaels a 48-43 lead. However, a three-pointer by senior red-shirt forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) cut the Iona lead to two with 1:40 remaining. However, a layup by Iona's Kashif Pratt gave Iona a 50-46 advantage with just 27 seconds to play.

With 19 seconds to play, Marist red-shirt junior guard Javon Parris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit the first of two free throws to cut the Red Foxes' deficit to three. Parris missed the second free throw, but promptly got his own rebound and got fouled again, this time with 16 seconds to go. Parris then missed the first free throw, but made the second, cutting the Iona lead to 50-48. Iona turned the ball over on its next possession, and with six seconds to go, Parris was fouled again. He hit the first to cut Iona's lead to 50-49, but missed the second. After the miss, the ball went out of bounds was given to Marist. On the inbounds play from underneath the basket, Goodwin dribbled and the hit a mid-range jump shot to give the Red Foxes a 51-50 advantage.

Iona called timeout after the basket, and then called timeout with 1.2 seconds to play after the Gaels inbounded the ball to halfcourt. However, the inbounds pass was deflected, and Iona was unable to get a shot off as time expired.

Schneider had game-highs in scoring and rebounding with 17 and seven, respectively, hitting five three-pointers in the process. Goodwin scored 12 on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 shooting from three-point range. Parris finished with six points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. With the win, Marist improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play. The victory gave the Red Foxes 10 victories in conference openers in their 12 years in the MAAC.
