Feb. 15, 2008

Final Stats

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 83-62 loss at Manhattan on Friday. Red-shirt sophomore point guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) led the Red Foxes with 19 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, as he played the entire game for the fourth consecutive contest.

Manhattan's Darryl Crawford came off the bench to lead all scorers with 24 points in 27 minutes. Antoine Pearson added 15, and Chris Smith had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The lead changed six times in a back-and-forth first half. With 5:01 remaining in the first half, a basket by Devezin put Marist in the lead by a score of 25-24. On the next possession, Manhattan's Devon Austin hit a three-pointer which allowed the Jaspers to take back the lead. They would not relinquish it the rest of the way.

Manhattan had a 35-31 halftime lead. On the first possession of the second half, a basket by red-shirt senior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) brought the Red Foxes to within two. However, the Red Foxes would draw no closer.

With 17:49 to play, a basket by senior swingman Ben Farmer (Clinton, Conn.) cut Manhattan's lead to 41-35. On the next possession, Manhattan's Laurence Jolicoeur was fouled shooting a three-pointer, and drained all three free throws. Jolicoeur's foul shots started Manhattan on a 19-4 run over a span of 8:27, as the Jaspers expanded their lead to 21.

The Red Foxes answered with a run of their own to get back into the contest, as Marist enjoyed a 17-3 spurt. A basket by Farmer with 4:05 remaining drew the Red Foxes to within seven at 65-58, but the Jaspers closed the game by outscoring Marist 18-4 from that point forward. Manhattan outscored Marist 48-31 in the second half.

Devezin was the only Red Fox to finish in double digits in scoring. Senior center Spongy Benjamin (St. Francis Village Erin, Trinidad) and red-shirt junior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored nine apiece, and Benjamin led Marist with nine rebounds. Marist shot .510 from the field for the game, but the Red Foxes were just 3-for-15 from three-point range and 7-for-13 from the free-throw line. Marist was outrebounded 32-23, and the Red Foxes committed 16 turnovers to the Jaspers' 11. Manhattan shot .533 from the field, and the Jaspers were 28-for-40 from the foul line. Manhattan had 32 free-throw attempts in the second half, hitting 23.

With the loss, Marist fell to 15-11 overall and 9-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Manhattan improved to 10-15 overall and 4-11 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes fell at Draddy Gymnasium for the seventh straight year, and the home team won its ninth consecutive game in the series.

Marist will return to action on Monday, as the Red Foxes will face Fairfield at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the MAAC Television Network, and will air locally on MSG.
