Final Stats
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist women's basketball team won their 25th game of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating the Rider Broncs 76-46 at Alumni Gymnasium. The Red Foxes moved to 15-0 in the MAAC and lengthened their longest winning streak of the season to 15 games. Sophomore forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored in double figures for the 26th straight game, recording her ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Three other Red Foxes scored in double figures on Sunday. Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored all 11 of her points in the first half while recording five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) also scored 11 points, making 5-of-7 shots from the field. Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) scored in double-figures for the second straight game, putting in 10 points.
Marist (25-2, 15-0 MAAC) started the game making their first four shots from the field on their way to a 9-0 run. After Tammy Meyers made Rider's first three-pointer of the game to make the score 9-3, the Red Foxes went on a 15-3 run, as Viani made a pair of threes to put Marist ahead 24-6 with 8:37 to go in the first half. Rider would close to within 14 with 3:35 to go, as Meyers connected on another triple. As they had all afternoon, the Red Foxes responded. Behind the frontcourt play of Johnson and the three-point shooting of Élise Caron (Quebec, Canada), Marist scored seven of the last 10 points in the first half to take a 41-21 lead at halftime.
The Broncs and Red Foxes traded points to start the second half. Rider stayed within 21 of Marist early in the half, as Meyers hit her third three of the game to make the score 49-28 with 16:14 to go. Once again, the Red Foxes went on a big run. Marist went on a 16-4 run powered by five points from Fitz to go ahead 64-32 with 7:55 to go. Marist would roll from their, winning the game by 30 points, 76-46.
Marist shot a season-high 51.9% from the field against the Broncs, making 28 of 54 shots. The Red Foxes also took care of the basketball with 20 assists to only 11 turnovers. They also cleaned up on the glass, holding a 44-32 rebounding edge. Marist also played a great game defensively holding Rider to 25.4% shooting from the field, the second-lowest percentage given up this season. Janele Henderson led the Broncs with 14 points, as Tammy Meyers added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Red Foxes will play their final true road game of the season on Friday when they travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on Saint Peter's. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
