CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Marist men's basketball team suffered its third consecutive defeat on Saturday, as the Red Foxes were downed by Cleveland State in an ESPNU BracketBusters contest by a score of 59-44. Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) led Marist with nine point and a team-high 10 rebounds as he played his first collegiate game in his hometown.
Marist (15-13) shot a season-low .296 (16-for-54) from the field while tying a season low with three three-pointers in made. The three threes came in 20 attempts for a season-low percentage of .150. The Red Foxes also went just 9-for-17 (.529) from the free-throw line. With nine points, Stilphen and red-shirt freshman guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) tied for the team high in scoring as the Red Foxes had a season low in points scored.
J'Nathan Bullock led Cleveland State with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Both totals were game highs. Bullock shot 7-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line. Cedrick Jackson and Norris Cole added 10 points apiece for the Vikings, who improved to 19-11.
A free throw by senior forward Shae McNamara (Milwaukee, Wis.) gave Marist a 9-8 lead with 12:22 left in the first half. On Cleveland State's next possession, Bullock's layup put the Vikings up 10-9 with 12:02 left in the half, and the Vikings did not trail the rest of the way.
Cleveland State led by as much as seven in the first half and took a 26-22 halftime lead. With 4:42 left to play, Goodwin was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. He hit two of his three foul shots, capping a 7-0 Marist run and bringing the Red Foxes to within two at 46-44. However, Marist went scoreless the rest of the way, as Cleveland State closed the game with a 13-0 run.
