DELAND, Fla. - The Marist softball team split a doubleheader versus Detroit and Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic in Deland, Florida. In the opener, Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tossed a two-hitter, and the Red Foxes beat Detroit 3-1 to get their first win of the year. They fell 7-1 to Ohio State in the second game.
Rigos and Detroit pitcher Lauren Memmer put up zeros for the first three innings. The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Courtney Gill singled in Jacqueline Norton with two outs.
Marist was able to answer Detroit in the bottom half as they pushed across three runs, on three hits. Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) delivered a clutch, two out, two RBI single to give Marist the 3-1 lead after Terah Paluba (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) singled in Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) with the tying run.
Rigos did the rest for the Red Foxes. She went the distance for the win (1-1) and had eight strikeouts.
Malloy, a freshman, had two hits for Marist who had seven for the game.
Memmer took the loss on the mound for Detroit.
In game two, Ohio State used a seven run third inning to drop the Red Foxes 7-1. They had seven hits in the inning.
Marist was out hit 11-4 on the game, and were led by Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) who had two hits and a run scored. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) knocked in the lone Marist run.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Marist (1-3). She fell to 0-2 on the year.
The Red Foxes will take two weeks off before heading to Charleston, S.C. for the College of Charleston Tournament on February 29.
