LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Marist baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Rider on Saturday. The Red Foxes gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth to suffer a 6-5 loss in game one, and were downed 4-1 in game two. Sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced Marist by going 6-for-8 on the day.
In game one, the Red Foxes broke open a 2-2 tie by scoring three times in the top of the ninth. With one out and the bases loaded, Curylo broke the tie with a two-run single. The Red Foxes added another run on a wild pitch, but Rider answered with four in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the victory.
Junior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) turned in a quality start for the Red Foxes, going 7.1 innings and allowing just two runs. He struck out five.
Curylo led Marist in game one by going 4-for-5. The Red Foxes also received two-hit performances from freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.)
In game two, Curylo had two of Marist's three hits and scored the team's lone run, when he came in following a triple on a sac fly from Pacione. Starter B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) took the loss for the Red Foxes, but struck out seven in 3.2 innings. Martin was relieved by freshman lefty Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.), who fanned fourin 2.1 innings.
Marist now stands at 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the MAAC. Rider is now 11-9 overall and 3-2 in MAAC play. The teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday at noon.
