WEST POINT, N.Y. - Behind eight strong innings from freshman right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) in his first career start, the Marist baseball team earned its third straight victory on Wednesday, a 7-1 triumph at Army. Chapin allowed just one run, six hits and two walks while striking out six to earn his first career triumph.
The Red Foxes also pounded 13 hits, as five players - junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.), freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), freshman right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) and senior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) - had two apiece.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring with three runs in the third, as Pacione's RBI double plated Glasser and put Marist up 1-0. That was followed by a two-run single by Curylo, which scored Meyer and Pacione.
In the fourth, the Red Foxes added a pair of runs. Junior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) homered to lead off the inning, and Marist made it 5-0 on a squeeze bunt by red-shirt freshman center fielder Shane Kingsley (Beacon Falls, N.Y.), which scored Gallic.
Army scored its lone run in the eighth, but Marist responded with two in the ninth on a two-run single by Meyer, which drove in Kingsley and Glasser.
Marist now stands at 14-16, while Army fell to 15-19. The Red Foxes and Black Knights will meet again in the Hudson Valley Baseball Classic, which will be played at Dutchess Stadium on April 30.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes start a three-game series against Le Moyne with a doubleheader starting at noon.
