SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Despite two home runs from freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and another by red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.), the Marist baseball team was defeated by Le Moyne 11-7 on Sunday in a non-conference game. The Dolphins completed a three-game series sweep with the victory, as the Red Foxes fell to 14-19 on the season.
Pacione's homer in the top of the first gave Marist a 1-0 lead. Le Moyne then reeled off eight consecutive runs - two in the first, three in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth - to take an 10-1 lead.
The Red Foxes then got their bats going and crawled back into the game. Marist scored two in the fifth on an RBI single by red-shirt freshman catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.). Marist then pushed across another run in the sixth to make it 10-4 on three walks and a wild pitch.
Marist then added three runs in the top of the seventh. Pacione started the inning with another home run, and after sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) reached on an infield single, Anderson's two-run homer made the score 10-7.
However, the Red Foxes would come no closer. Le Moyne's Luke Nellis pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, and Phil St. Amant's second home run of the game - a solo shot in the eighth - gave Le Moyne an 11-7 lead.
Robby Perez also hit two homers for Le Moyne. Dan Tunison pitched the first five innings for the Dolphins to get the victory and improve to 2-1 on the season. Le Moyne is now 19-16 on the year.
For Marist, freshman left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) was charged with the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday, when they play the last of five consecutive road games at Hartford. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Marist will return to McCann Field for a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series against Saint Peter's next Saturday and Sunday.
