Marist Scores Five In Ninth To Down Hartford

April 22, 2008

Final Stats

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Erupting for five runs in the top of the ninth, the Marist baseball team rebounded from a two-run deficit to earn an 8-5 triumph over Hartford in a non-conference game on Tuesday. Sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) had four hits for the Red Foxes, who also received 4.1 strong innings of relief from winning pitcher Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.).

Curylo started the Marist rally in the ninth with a leadoff double. Freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double which scored Curylo and cut Hartford's lead to 5-4. Sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added another double, which scored Pacione at tied the game at five apiece, but he was thrown out trying to advance to third.

Junior Zach Starkey (Aurora, Ill.) then laced a pinch-hit single, and red-shirt freshman catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) added one of his own to put runners on first and second. Then, an RBI ground-rule double by junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) scored Kyle LaHonta (Walnut Creek, Calif.), who was pinch-running for Starkey, gave Marist a 6-5 lead. Junior Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) later added a two-run single to give the Red Foxes a three-run cushion.

Chapin, a freshman, entered the game in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way for Marist to improve to 2-1 on the season. He allowed just two hits and one run while striking out three. Chapin retired the last 10 batters he faced.

Nugent had a three-hit game for the Red Foxes. Meyer and Gauck each had two-hit games.

With the victory, the Red Foxes improved to 15-19 overall. Hartford is now 14-19.

Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at noon. The teams will play a three-game series, with the finale coming on Sunday.
