Game Two Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team swept Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at McCann Baseball Field, prevailing 10-1 in the first game and 3-2 in the second game. The Red Foxes received a complete game from junior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) in game one, and sophomore right-hander Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) earned his team-leading sixth victory of the season in game two.
In game one, Rickards needed just 97 pitches to go the distance, 65 of which were strikes. He tossed a five-hitter and issued just two walks while striking out four. Rickards, who retired nine in a row at one point, improved his record to 3-5.
Red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) led the Marist offensive attack with three hits. Sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), senior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and red-shirt center fielder Shane Kingsley (Beacon Falls, N.Y.) drove in two runs apiece.
Saint Peter's scored first in the top of the second, but the Red Foxes took the lead with three in the bottom of the second. All of Marist's runs came with two outs, as a two-run double by Curylo drove in Kingsley and freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.). Anderson followed with a single to score Curylo to make the score 3-1.
A sacrifice fly by Glasser in the seventh gave Marist a 4-1 lead. The Red Foxes then broke the game open by scoring six times in the seventh, doing so with only three hits in the inning.
Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple into the right field corner. He scored two batters later on an infield single by sophomore center fielder Kyle LaHonta (Walnut Creek, Calif.), who then advanced to third on a single by junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.). Meyer and LaHonta then pulled off a double steal to put Marist up 2-0. A single by Curylo then scored Meyer to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 advantage.
Cary went 6.1 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and a walk while striking out five. Both of the Peacocks' runs came in the seventh, but junior righty Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen to get the game's final two outs for his team-leading third save of the year.
Marist improved to 17-19 overall and 7-7 in the MAAC, while Saint Peter's fell to 16-22 and 5-9 in the conference.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at noon. Sophomore left-hander Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) will get the start for Marist, and Chris Innis will get the call for Saint Peter's.
