Marist Defeated By Saint Peter's In Series Finale

April 27, 2008

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team fell in the finale of its three-game series with Saint Peter's on Sunday at McCann Baseball Field, falling by a score of 6-3. The Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead into the sixth, but a four-run sixth for the Peacocks enabled them to take the lead for good.

Sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and red-shirt freshman catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) had two hits apiece for Marist, which fell to 17-20 overall and 7-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

After Saint Peter's scored in the top of the first, Marist tied the game on a bases-loaded walk by junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.). The Peacocks then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. However, Marist took a 3-2 lead when Curylo singled to left field, which scored red-shirt center fielder Shane Kingsley (Beacon Falls, N.Y.). When the Curylo's hit eluded Saint Peter's left fielder Michael LaCava, Marist junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) also came around to score.

Saint Peter's tied the game in the sixth on a ground-rule double by Kevin Kallert, and took the lead when Joe Romano had an RBI single. Michael LaCava then hit a two-run single, which scored both Kallert and Romano to put the Peacocks up four.

The Red Foxes loaded the bases in the seventh inning with two outs, but were unable to score. Marist left 11 runners on base in the game, as compared to three from Saint Peter's.

Making his first collegiate start, Craig Hughes (2-0) earned the victory for Saint Peter's, going the first five innings. Jeff Bayse pitched the final four innings to earn his first save of the season. Bayse retired the last seven batters he faced.

Sophomore left-hander Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) took the loss for the Red Foxes. He was charged with all six of the Peacocks' runs in 5.1 innings of work. Peterson (1-4) struck out four and did not walk any. Freshman right-hander Kyle Putnam (Newburgh, N.Y.) did not allow a run in 3.2 innings of relief. He gave up just two hits and had three strikeouts without walking any.

Marist fell to 17-20 overall and 7-8 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's is now 17-22 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Marist will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference contest at Albany, which will begin at 3 p.m. It will be the second time this season the Red Foxes will match up with the Great Danes, with Marist earning a 13-4 victory on April 8.
