Marist Baseball Wins Third Straight

April 5, 2008

Final Stats

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team earned a 5-1 victory at Iona on Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest. The Red Foxes earned their third straight victory behind a complete game effort from junior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.), who allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The Red Foxes pounded out 12 hits, as sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.), freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.), red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) and junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) had two apiece.

Marist got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. After a single by Anderson and a double by red-shirt freshman catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.), Meyer drove home Anderson from third on a groundout to shortstop. After Iona tied the game in the third, Meyer started a Marist rally in the fifth with leadoff single. With two outs, Meyer stole second and was driven home on a double by sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.). The Red Foxes had five doubles in the contest, with two coming from Pacione.

The Red Foxes added two runs in the seventh, as Meyer started another rally with a single and would later score from second on an infield error. Marist added another run that inning on a single by McDonough, which plated Pacione, who had reached on an error.

Marist added its final run in the ninth, when Curylo led off the inning with a double, and scored on an RBI double by Pacione.

Rickards improved to 2-3 on the season. He threw 107 pitches, 71 of which were strikes.

Starting pitcher Shane Sveda took the loss, falling to 0-4 on the season. Sveda pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out nine. Joe Lorenzo had two doubles for Iona, and Paul Salerno had two singles and an RBI.

The Red Foxes now stand at 8-12 overall and 3-4 in the MAAC, while Iona fell to 1-21 overall and 1-6 in the MAAC. The teams will close out their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, with a seven-inning game starting at noon and a nine-inning game afterward.
