POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team was downed by Siena in both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday at McCann Baseball Field, falling by scores of 2-1 and 10-1. The Red Foxes, who have now dropped five straight, stand at 19-28 overall and 8-15 in the MAAC.
In game one, Marist starter Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) took the loss despite allowing just one run and four hits in 6.2 innings. Rickards fell to 4-7 on the season. Junior right-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) allowed two hits and an unearned run in 2.1 innings or relief.
Siena got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run by Moises Rivera in the top of the first. The score remained 1-0 until the eighth, when the Saints added their second run on an error.
Marist cut the lead to 2-1 to sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit his team-high fourth home run of the season to right-center with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Following Gauck's homer, red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) doubled, but Siena closer Dan Lazzaroni then came in to get the final five outs.
Craig Chaput (4-7) got the win for Siena, striking out seven in 7.1 innings. Chaput allowed just six hits and two walks.
Anderson and freshman right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) had two hits apiece for the Red Foxes.
In game two, Siena's Zach Hartman (8-0) tossed a complete game two-hitter. Hartman held the Red Foxes hitless through the first three innings. Both Marist hits came off the bat of freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) - a fourth-inning double and a sixth-inning single. The Red Foxes scored their lone run on a bases loaded walk by junior designated hitter Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.).
Siena scored its first run in the third before erupting for six in the fifth and three in the sixth. Marist sophomore lefty Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) started and took the loss, falling to 1-5 on the season.
Siena shortstop Eric Klepps had four hits in the doubleheader, three of which were doubles. The Saints clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament with the doubleheader sweep, and now stand at 27-24 overall and 15-8 in the MAAC.
Marist will conclude its season tomorrow, as the Red Foxes will wrap up their series with Siena with a single game starting at noon. Prior to the game, Marist will honor seniors Tom Close (Devon, Pa.) and Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) as part of its Senior Day ceremony. Close will start for Marist, and Will Hassett is scheduled to start for Siena.
