MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. - The Marist volleyball team earned its first win of the 2008 season on Saturday with a 3- 1 (25-21, 27-25, 24-26, 29-27) win over Lehigh at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Senior right-side hitter Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) set a new career-high with 24 digs in the victory. Earlier in the day, Marist fell to co-host Robert Morris 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 19-25, 17-25), putting the Red Foxes' record at 1-3 after the first weekend of the season.
For the third straight match, Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) also had a double-double with 45 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) and junior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) each recorded double-digit kills for the Red Foxes. Schmid had 11 kills and hit a team-high .296 while Schultze added 10 kills.
Marist's hitting was dominant in the first and fourth sets, hitting .321 in the first set and .341 in the deciding fourth set. In a match that saw a combined 164 digs, the Red Foxes' blocking powered Marist to its first win of the season. The Red Foxes had 10 total team blocks to the Mountain Hawks' two. Sophomore middle blocker Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) led Marist's blocking effort with six blocks. Schaefer was in on four blocks. Marist outhit Lehigh .199-.145, with the Mountain Hawks holding a slight 83-81 advantage in digs.
Lehigh (1-3) was led by Angelika Kopacz, who had 17 kills and 23 digs. Mo McReynolds had 15 kills and Chelsea Sheridan added 14 kills, hitting a match-high .571. Libero Emma Melendez had a match-high 24 digs.
Marist will host the Army Black Knights on Tuesday for the Red Foxes' home opener at the McCann Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
