BETHLEHEM, PA. - The Marist volleyball team returned to its winning ways on Saturday, defeating both Coppin State and Lehigh 3-0 at Leeman-Turner Arena in the Crosstown Tournament. The Red Foxes' defense held both the Eagles and the Mountain Hawks to under .200 in hitting percentage.
The freshmen for the Red Foxes led the way in Marist's first match of the day, a 25-9, 25-13, 25-16 win over Coppin State. Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) each had four kills. Harridsleff had no attack errors and hit .667. Campbell and junior Lindsey O'Dell (Friendswood, Texas) each led the Red Foxes with six digs.
Marist dominated the opening set against the Eagles, hitting .500 with no errors to win the set 25-9. Coppin State hit -.185 in the set. The Red Foxes' defense stayed strong in the second set, holding Coppin State to a .043 hitting percentage to take the second 25-13. Marist opened the third set on a 9-2 run and turned that into a 17-7 lead with five straight points off the serve of Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.). Overall, the Red Foxes were no match for Coppin State, holding them to a -.042 hitting percentage for the match.
The Red Foxes capped their weekend against Lehigh. The opening set between Marist and the Mountain Hawks featured 10 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 10-10 the Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by back to back kills from Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas), to take a 16-10 lead. Lehigh fought back to tie the set at 24-24, but a Campbell service ace and a Schmid sealed the deal for Marist who took the first set 26-24.
Lehigh took the momentum in the second set, going on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. Marist responded with a 6-1 run of its own to get within a point at 15-14. The Red Foxes took the lead for good at 21-21 when a kill from Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) gave Marist a 22-21 lead. Marist wound up winning the second set 25-22. The Red Foxes led the whole way in the third set, hitting .324 in the deciding set to win 25-19 and sweep the Mountain Hawks.
Foss led Marist with 13 kills against Lehigh and also had seven digs. Schmid added 10 kills and a team-high two blocks. Setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had 32 assists and nine digs in the sweep. Brosky led Marist with 13 digs.
Marist (4-8) returns home on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at the McCann Center against Hartford.
