New Britain, Conn. - The Marist men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Central Connecticut, a 2007 College Cup round of 16 opponent, on the road. Marist (1-3-1) got a goal from a fourth different source during the Wednesday matinee.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a shot from Raphael Guimaraes to give the home squad a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Guimaraes would get another shot, but on his second opportunity, Marist freshman goalkeeper Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.) would come up with his first of four saves on the day.
Three minutes after Kessler's first save, the Red Foxes would make a substitution to bring junior Kevin Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) into the match. In his first five minutes of play he was able to take two shots, with the ladder being put into the back of the net off the post. It was Brown's first goal of the season, scored in the 41st minute. The score remained 1-1 through halftime.
The second half would be a story of missed opportunities for the Red Foxes. With Marist trailing by one in the 71st minute, freshman Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) would put a shot on goal but CCSU goalkeeper Paul Armstrong was there to make the save.
Marist will return home to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field for a three-game home stand beginning this Saturday, when the Red Foxes play host to Fordham. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. Also during the stand, Marist will host two America East opponents in Stony Brook and the University of Albany, both in evening contests.
