POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team was no match for the Army in its 2008 home opener at the McCann Center, as the Black Knights hit .368 in a 3-0 (15-25, 24-26, 17-25) sweep of the Red Foxes Tuesday night. Junior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led all players with 16 kills while hitting .289.
Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) added seven kills while hitting .333 and Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) had a balanced match with five kills, six digs, and two blocks.
Army (3-0) dominated the Red Foxes in the first set, hitting .440 in the opening frame to jump out to an 18-11 lead. The Black Knights sided-out 15 of 16 times in the set and held Marist to a .212 hitting percentage to take the set 25-15. The Red Foxes would come out on fire to start the second set, getting six kills from Schultze, Schmid, and Schaefer to take an early 9-3 lead. Marist held the lead throughout much of the set, getting it as high as eight at 19-11 on a Schmid kill.
Army would take the momemtum from there, going on a 9-1 run off the serve of Jamie Clark and Briana Stremick to tie the set at 20-20. Marist and Army battled back and forth to a 24-24 tie, but Army would take the next two points on a kill by Elizabeth Lazzari and a solo block from Stremick to take a 2-0 lead.
Marist (1-4) hung tough with Army to start the third set, battling to a 5-5 tie early on. Army pulled away slightly, going on an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Black Knights hitting was just too powerful for the Red Foxes in this set as Army outhit the Red Foxes .412-.167 to take the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Rachael Breinling led a balanced Army offense with 10 kills and hit a match-high .643. Stremick had nine kills with Clark adding eight. The Black Knights had four players hit .333 or better in the match. Setter Maureen Bannon had 32 assists on the night. Army outhit Marist .368-.208 in the match and held a slim 38-37 advantage in digs.
The Red Foxes go on the road this weekend for four matches at the High Point University Classic in High Point, N.C. Marist begins action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against UNC Greensboro. The Red Foxes will also take on South Carolina State on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
