POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist (2-5-1) men's soccer team capped a double header at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, Sunday evening against Albany (6-2). Despite the loss, Marist held the edge in corner kicks, 7-4.
Marist was down 2-0, late in the first half when Albany committed a foul deep in their own end. The foul was called just inches outside of the 18-meter box, which made it just inches from being called a penalty kick. The ensuing direct kick proved fruitless, as freshman Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) took a shot, but it was blocked by the wall of the Great Danes. At halftime, Marist trailed 2-0.
Just minutes into the second half, each team would get a goal; Albany struck first to increase their lead to 3-0. Two minutes later, freshman Troy Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.) finished on a header that came from the corner off the foot of Szabo. The ball was served into the box from the left corner, to the near post, and Confessore found the back of the net. The goal was the first of Confessore's of the season, and first of his career at Marist.
Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.) was in goal for the Red Foxes, and fell to 2-4 with the loss, Sunday evening. Kessler made two saves in this outing.
The Red Foxes return to action when they wrap up non-conference play on the road against the Richmond Spiders. The tilt will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
