Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Marist opened its 2008 home schedule on Thursday evening against the Seton Hall Pirates, but fell short in their comeback attempt, dropping the contest 2-1.
After playing even for the first 40 minutes, Seton Hall would get on the board first, when Nicki Gross would score on a loose ball to put the Pirates ahead 1-0. The team would add another goal in the early stages of the second half to put Seton Hall ahead by two.
During the first half sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) would make a few key stops to keep the score tied at zero. Balzarini made six stops in total.
Marist (1-2) would not go quietly as junior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) finished a free kick from classmate Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.) in the 78th minute. The goal was the 16th of her career and second of the season. Her career mark puts Fox in sole possession of fifth place, surpassing Kasey Sibrinsz. Fox is also two points away from fifth all time in points. Sibrinsz stands in fifth place in points with 37.
The comeback had one more chance, when Marist was awarded a corner kick in 89th minute; however, sophomore Kassandra Palmer (Washington, N.J.) could not connect with any Red Foxes in the box.
The Red Foxes held the edge in many key statistical categories despite dropping the contest. Marist led in corner kicks 5-3, had fewer offsides, 2-4, made more saves, 6-2 and blocked one Seton Hall shot.
Marist returns to action on Friday, Sept. 12, when they travel to Fordham, for a non-conference tilt with the Rams. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
