Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - After playing a scoreless first half, Marist would go on to score two goals in the second stanza to defeat Army 2-1 Friday night. In a night of firsts, three freshmen played key roles in getting the teams' first victory of 2008.
Freshman goalkeeper Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.) notched was given the nod for his first collegiate start. He recorded five saves to earn his first victory in the NCAA ranks. The most notable of his five stops came in the final minute of the first half, when he made a crucial save off a free kick that came from just outside the 18-meter box. That kept the score at 0-0 going into the break.
When the second half opened, Marist would strike first, in the 63rd minute, when Nico Mossa (Pelham, N.Y.). Witkowski's goal was his first at Marist.
The Red Foxes would add an insurance goal at the time in the 80th minute off a Tim Garger (Garden City, N.Y.) blast from the left side, that beat Army net minder A.J. Glubzinski. Garger notched his first goal of the season also.
Garger's marker would become the game winner when Army would put a ball behind Kessler in the 83rd minute. Patrick McVey scored the goal for the Black Knights (0-3).
Marist held the edge in shots on goal, 8-6 and corner kicks, doubling up the Black Knights, 8-4.
With the win, Marist improves their all-time record against Army to 8-3-1 and 3-2 during the last five meetings. The Red Foxes and Black Knights have traded wins and losses each of their last five meetings, dating back to 2003.
Marist will return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, when they face Oregon State in Poughkeepsie. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
