BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist men's basketball team dropped its second straight on Sunday, as the Red Foxes suffered an 83-73 defeat at the hands of Loyola in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 15 points apiece to lead the Red Foxes.
Schneider, who grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, played all 40 minutes and added three assists and two steals. He also scored his 800th career point in the game. Williams shot 4-for-8 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line in 22 minutes off the bench. Red-shirt junior guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) finished with 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds, while freshman guard R.J. Hall (Bloomfield, N.J.) also scored 11, including a 3-for-3 performance from three-point range.
In the first half, there were six lead changes and five ties, as Loyola held a 38-35 advantage at the intermission. The Red Foxes trailed by as much as seven in the first half before battling back.
Marist never led in the second half. With the score tied at 54 apiece. Loyola's Brett Harvey attempted to throw an alley-oop pass that instead went in the basket for a three-pointer. Hall answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to tie score at 57, but a three-pointer by Harvey on Loyola's next possession gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with 9:04 remaining.
Jamal Barney led five Loyola scorers in double digits with 22. Barney added six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Marquis Sullivan scored 17 on the strength of five three-pointers in 14 minutes off the bench, and Jawaan Wright contributed 13 points and eight rebounds - all of which came in the first half.
Loyola held a 40-30 rebounding advantage and committed just 10 turnovers. The Greyhounds also shot 21-doe-23 from the free-throw line. Marist shot 8-for-16 from three-point range.
Marist is now 7-13 overall and 3-5 MAAC, while Loyola improved to 8-12 overall and 3-5 in MAAC play.
Marist returns to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes take on Canisius at the McCann Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU as the second half of a doubleheader with the Marist women's team, which will host Fairfield at 4:30 in a game also broadcast by ESPNU.
