POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team dropped its third straight on Friday, suffering a 79-70 loss to Canisius at the McCann Center in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest. Freshman guard Mike Taylor (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a career-high 12 points, and red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) notched his third double-double in the last four games with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Taylor and Schneider were two of the four Red Foxes to score in double digits, as red-shirt junior guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) and red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) each finished with 10 points apiece. Devezin had a game-high five assists, and Williams notched six rebounds.
Although the final margin was the largest lead Canisius had, and there were five ties and three lead changes in the game, the Red Foxes held the lead for just 55 seconds in the game. A 9-3 spurt gave the Golden Griffins an eight-point lead with 12:01 remaining in the first half. After the Red Foxes tied the score at 27 apiece with 5:09 left in the half on a pair of free throws by red-shirt senior guard Kaylen Gregory (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands), Canisius outscored Marist 10-5 over the remainder of the half to take a 37-32 lead to the locker room.
A layup by Williams with 15:52 to play gave Marist its lone lead of the second half at 42-41. However, Canisius answered that with a 6-0 run over the next 1:33. With 10:11 to play, a three-pointer by Taylor tied the score at 57 all, but Canisius' Frank Turner answered with a basket on the ensuing possession which would give the Golden Griffins the lead for good.
Turner, who played all 40 minutes, led all scorers with 22 points. He shot 8-for-12 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, including a 4-for-4 performance from the line in the final minute. He added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Three more Golden Griffins scored in double digits, including Tomas Vazquez-Simmons (12 points, six rebounds), Elton Frazier (12 points, four blocks) and Julius Coles (11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, three assists). Greg Logins scored nine and hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds.
Canisius shot 47.7 percent (31-for-65) from the field, while Marist shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63). The Golden Griffins improved to 7-12 overall and 2-7 in the MAAC, while Marist is now 7-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, when they host Loyola (Md.) at the McCann Center at 4 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased online at GoRedFoxes.com and at the Marist Ticket Office in the McCann Center.
