LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist women's soccer team fell to Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match 2-1 on the road on Sunday afternoon. Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown. N.J.) scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute. Senior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) fed the ball to Esteve after a corner kick was served into the box.
As a team, the Red Foxes took seven corner kicks, to Rider's two, and outshot their counterparts 14-10 in the match. In the first half Marist took six corners as opposed to Rider who did not have an attempt in the stanza.
Rider leveled the score at one apiece in the 23rd minute as Kate Murphy scored her first of two goals in the match. She got the game-winner at the 63:55 mark when she took a feed from Claire Thompson and beat Marist keeper Caitlin Landsman (Burke, Va.) from 18 yards out.
Landsman came in for Marist starting goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.). Balzarini made one save in the first 35 minutes of the match. Landsman made five saves in the remaining 55 minutes and suffered her first collegiate loss.
Marist will begin a three-game homestand this week. The Red Foxes will host Columbia on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
