NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team moved back to .500 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Sunday after a 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 21-25) loss at Iona Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes are now 4-4 in the MAAC and 10-9 overall this season. Marist hit .379 in its win in the first set, but under .100 in each of the next three sets. Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led all players with 24 kills.
Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led Marist with 19 digs as Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) was in on seven blocks.
The Red Foxes opened the match on a 3-0 run, taking advantage of a pair of Iona errors. The Gaels came back to tie the set at 4-4 on a Rachel Whitten service ace and Sarah Wiener kill. With the set tied at 7-7, Iona took the lead 9-7 on a Colleen Genett kill and a block by Genett and Bethany Schornack. Marist then went on a 3-0 run capped by a Schultze kill to take a 10-9 lead. A Rachel Whitten kill tied the set at 10-10. Iona took the lead back as 12-11 on a Molly O'Shea kill. The Gaels led 18-16 when Schultze and Schmid hit back-to-back kills to tie the set at 18-18. With the set tied 19-19, Marist took the lead on a block by Schmid and Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.). The Red Foxes extended the lead to 21-19 on a Schmid kill. Marist led the rest of the way, winning the set 25-22 on a Schultze kill.
Marist controlled the early part of the second set, going ahead 8-4. Iona (6-12, 3-5 MAAC), though, came back with a 8-1 run highlighted by two blocks and two O'Shea kills to take a 12-9 lead. The Gaels grew their lead to five, 16-11, with a Wiener kill. Marist got back in the match with kills by Schultze and Harridsleff to tie the set at 18-18. Iona, however, proved to be too much in the second set. The Gaels won seven of the last nine points to win the set 25-20 and even the match at a set apiece.
Iona led the whole way in the third set, winning the set 25-22. The Gaels led by as much as five at 16-11, with Marist battling back to tie the set at 19-19. Marist got off to a quick 6-1 lead to start the fourth set, getting two blocks and two Schultze kills along the way. The Red Foxes kept the lead at 14-10 with a Foss kill. Iona then got an O'Shea kill to get within three, then went on a four-point run on Schornack's serve to take a 15-14 lead. Marist answered the Gaels' run with a four-point run of their own, capped by a Schultze kill to make the score 18-15. Iona scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 19-19. With the set tied at 21-21, the Gaels took the last four points to win the set 25-21 and the match three sets to one.
Iona hit .199 for the match and held Marist to a .120 mark. The Gaels also held a 69-62 advantage in digs and an 11.5-9 advantage in blocks. O'Shea led Iona with 19 kills, hitting .421 for the match. Wiener added twelve kills. Genett and Schornack each had seven blocks, and libero Allison Nieters led all players with 30 digs.
Marist returns to the McCann Center next weekend for a pair of MAAC matches. The first comes on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. against the Rider Broncs.
