POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 home loss at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field to Columbia in a non-conference match on Tuesday. Freshman forward Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.) scored the Red Foxes' lone goal, which came in the second half.
Sabia's goal came at the 51:40 mark, and was set up by a pass from senior forward Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.). It was Sabia's fourth goal of the season, and Fox's fifth assist.
Sabia and Fox led the Red Foxes with two shots apiece.
All three of Columbia's goals came in the first half. Chrissy Butler started the scoring at the 3:47 mark with a header that came immediately after a header of hers hit the crossbar. Sophie Reiser gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage at the 10:02 mark with a shot from 20 yards out that was tucked in the top right corner of the net. Ashley Mistele closed out Columbia's scoring with a goal at the 29:05 mark, which was set up by a pass from Liz Wicks.
Columbia held an 11-9 advantage in shots for the match. The Lions held a 7-1 edge in the first half, but the Red Foxes bounced back to hold an 8-4 edge in shots in the second half. Columbia also led in corner kicks, 3-1.
Freshman Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) took over in goal in the second half, and was credited with three saves.
Marist fell to 5-7-2 overall, while Columbia improved to 6-5-2.
Marist will return to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes host Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. Kickoff at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is set for 7 p.m.
