POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After it trailed 2-0 just 17 minutes into the match, the Marist women's soccer team scored four consecutive goals to defeat the Canisius Golden Griffins 4-2 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. Senior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) scored two goals in the match and moved into a tie for the career goals record at Marist with 24 goals in her career.
Fox got her first goal of the night to cut the Canisius lead to one in the 27th minute. She beat the Griffs keeper to the ball at the top of the box, went around her and put the ball away.
After a Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) goal knotted the score at two in the 58th minute, the Red Foxes took the lead for good in the 78th minute. Freshman Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.) played a through ball from classmate Jessica Arabia (Naperville, Ill.), after Arabia intercepted a Canisius goal kick. The tally was Sabia's fifth of the season and second game-winner.
Fox added an insurance goal, her seventh of the season, in the 87th minute on a penalty kick. It came as the result of a handball by a Canisius defender in the box.
Junior goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made three saves in goal and got her fifth win of the season. With the win, Marist improved to 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the MAAC.
As a team, Marist outshot Canisius 21-7 in the match and 12-1 in the second stanza.
The women's soccer team will play host the Niagara Purple Eagles on Senior Day, this Sunday, Oct. 18. The annual pre-game ceremony will honor the program's five seniors: Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.), Balzarini, Teresa Ferraro (Floral Park, N.Y.), Fox and Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.). The ceremony is scheduled for approximately 12:40 p.m., while kickoff is slated for 1 p.m., at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
