POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball earned a key win Sunday afternoon at the McCann Center, rallying from one set down to beat Siena 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20). The Red Foxes started the second-half of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season by sweeping the season series with the MAAC preseason co-favorites. Senior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led Marist with 22 kills.
Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had 13 kills and hit .407 for the match. Libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with 19 digs, passing 1,000 for her career. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) had a match-high six blocks, including two solo blocks. Marist's win over the Saints was the first for the Red Foxes at the McCann Center since the 2002 season.
Siena (8-11, 6-4 MAAC) controlled the early part of the first set, taking an 8-5 lead on a Jasmine Brown kill. After an Aubrey Bobo kill gave the Saints a 10-6 lead, Marist went on a 3-0 run that included a Foss ace and a block by Burton and Schultze to get within one at 10-9. The Saints eventually got their lead back up to four at 18-14 on a Marist error. The Red Foxes got back on serve on a Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) kill, then took the next three points to tie the set at 18-18. After an Amanda Sawlsville kill gave Siena a 19-18 lead, the Red Foxes got back-to-back kills by Schultze to take a 20-19 lead. That would be the last lead for Marist in the set, as Siena won the next six points to win the set 25-20.
The Saints took control of the second set, going ahead 12-7 on a Bobo kill. Marist cut the lead to three at 13-10 on a Harridsleff kill. Siena led by three, 16-13, when the Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run highlighted by two blocks by Burton and Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) to take the lead 19-16. Marist grew the lead to five at 23-18 on consecutive kills by Schultze and Schmid. The Red Foxes took the set 25-20 on a Schultze kill, evening the match at one set apiece. Marist hit .333 in the second set, holding Siena to .056.
The third set was the closest of the match, featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. Siena jumped out to a 7-3 lead, getting kills by McCurty and Bobo as well as a block by Sawlsville and McCurty. After a McCurty kill put the Saints ahead 8-5, Marist used kills by Foss and Schultze to power a 4-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. McCurty then tied the set at 9-9 with a kill. With the set tied 13-13, Siena took a 14-13 lead on a McCurty kill. The Red Foxes then went on a four-point run that included two Schmid aces, giving Marist a 17-14 lead. Marist grew its lead to four at 21-17 on a Schmid kill. Siena, though, would come back. The Saints went on a 6-2 run capped off by a block by Bobo and Sawlsville to tie the set at 23-23.
Marist had a set point opportunity at 24-23 after a Foss kill, but Siena tied the set at 24-24 with a Bobo kill. Harridsleff then hit a kill to give Marist a 25-24 lead, and Foss followed with a kill to give the Red Foxes the 26-24 win in the third set and a 2-1 set advantage.
Marist (12-9, 6-4 MAAC) took a 5-2 lead to start the fourth set, getting kills by Schultze, Foss, and Harridsleff. The Red Foxes grew the lead to four at 9-5 on a block by Schmid and Harridsleff. Siena came back with kills by McCurty and Bobo to get within one at 16-15. After a block by Brown and McCurty made the score 17-16, Marist got kills by Schmid and Foss to go ahead 19-16 and get some separation from the Saints. Siena got back within one at 19-18 on kills by McCurty and Sarah Sivertson. A Foss kill put Marist back on serve at 20-18, and a Harridsleff ace and Siena error gave the Red Foxes a 22-18 lead. Marist earned match point at 24-19 with a Schultze kill. Siena fought off a match point with a Bobo kill at 24-20, but Schultze put down a Saints' overpass to give Marist a 25-20 win in the fourth set and the match win 3-1.
The Red Foxes hit .263 for the match, hitting .405 in the final set. Siena hit .255 for the match, getting a match-high 24 kills from McCurty. The Saints held a 71-50 advantage in digs, while Marist had a 10-9 edge in blocks. Libero Lesli Akeo led all players with 23 digs, while Bobo had 17 digs to go with 17 kills.
Marist now goes on the road for its next three matches, starting Saturday, Oct. 30 at Loyola. First serve at Reitz Arena is at 8 p.m.
