POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team is on a four-game unbeaten streak, after it defeated Rider 2-0 on Sunday, at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. Junior Joe Touloumis scored his third game-winning goal of the season in the 73rd minute, his fifth marker of the season.
Junior Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) posted his fifth shutout of the season as he made seven saves in the match, including five stops in the first half.
Marist (7-6-2, 3-2-1 MAAC) put three shots on goal in the first minute of the match. Touloumis had two shots during the stretch, while freshman Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) had the third chance 58 seconds into the match. Sophomore Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.), was alone in the box about 12 yards from the goal in the 26th minute. His shot was saved by Rider keeper, Matt Perrella, and the teams headed into the locker room scoreless at halftime.
The Red Foxes hit two posts in the second half, off shots by Troy Confessore (Kendell Park, N.J.) and Szabo. Szabo had three shots on goal in the match.
Touloumis found the back of the net in the 73rd minute, after he took a feed from Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.), who was on the baseline. Touloumis hit the ball in from the tip of his foot and into the goal. Brossard earned a penalty kick for the team in the 83rd minute, after he was pulled down in the box. Szabo converted on the ensuing opportunity to put Marist up 2-0.
As a team, the Red Foxes defended two set pieces in the final 20 minutes of the match to hold Rider scoreless. Marist posted 10 shots on goal in the match to Rider's seven. Additionally, the Red Foxes took eight corner kicks including five in the second half.
Marist will take to the road on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., when it plays Canisius in a MAAC match.
