BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team came back from one set down Saturday afternoon to defeat Canisius 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22) at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Red Foxes had a season-high 13 blocks in the match, 11 of which came in the last three sets. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) led all players with eight blocks, tying a career-high. Burton also had eight kills on the afternoon.
Senior setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) also tied her career-high for blocks, getting in on five rejections to go with 45 assists. Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) set a new career-high with five blocks and had eight kills. Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had 13 kills and hit .346.
The two teams opened the match by playing to a 6-6 tie in the first set. Marist (9-7, 3-2 MAAC) then used a Foss kill to spark a 5-0 run highlighted by two Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) service aces to take an 11-6 lead. Canisius cut into the Red Foxes' lead, getting within three at 13-10 on a Danielle Brawn kill. After a Schmid kill made the score 14-11, the Golden Griffins went on a 5-0 run of their own to take a 16-14 lead. Canisius grew its lead to five at 22-17 on a service ace by Allyson Severyn. The Golden Griffins hit .346 for the set and took it 25-22.
Marist took an early 3-0 lead to open the second set, getting a block by Schmid and Schultze along the way. The Red Foxes led 5-3 when a Layne Adams kill started Canisius on a 4-0 run that gave the Golden Griffins a 7-5 lead. Marist answered with a three-point run capped by a Foss kill to tie the set at 8-8. The two teams then traded points to get to a 12-12 tie. Kills by Harridsleff and Foss broke the stalemate and gave Marist a 14-12 lead. The Golden Griffins tied the set at 15-15 on a Renee Lettow kill, and the two teams battled to an 18-18 tie. Once again, Marist took a two point lead on a Schmid kill and an ace by Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). After Canisius tied the set at 20-20, Marist closed the set on a 5-1 run, getting kills from Harridsleff and Burton as well as a block by the duo to win the set 25-21 and even the match at one set apiece.
Canisius (6-9, 3-2 MAAC) opened the third set on a 4-0 run, highlighted by a block by Samantha Good and Janelle Davis. The Golden Griffins kept the lead at four at 12-8, getting a kill by Michelle Godfrey. Marist then got a kill from from Foss to get back on serve at 12-9. The Red Foxes registered blocks on each of the next three points to tie the set at 12-12, with Burton in on all three of them. Burton then put down a kill to give Marist a 13-12 lead. Canisius took the lead back at 16-14 on a pair of Marist errors. A block by Schmid and Jan put Marist on serve at 16-15, and a solo block by Harridsleff tied the set at 16-16. The Red Foxes then took a 17-16 lead on a block by Schultze and Schmid. A Harridsleff kill then put Marist ahead 18-16. Canisius would get kills from Good and Davis on its way to tying the set at 21-21. Marist then closed out the set by taking the last four points to win the set 25-21. The Red Foxes clinched the two sets to one lead with back to back blocks by Burton and Schultze at 24-21 and by Burton and Stoiberg at 25-21. Marist had eight blocks in the set and held Canisius to a .000 hitting percentage.
Marist took an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set, getting two aces by Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) in the process. The Red Foxes kept the lead at four at 13-9 on a Jan kill. Canisius then took advantage of a pair of Marist miscues to make the score 13-11, and a Brawn service ace got the Golden Griffins within one at 13-12. Lettow and Godfrey tied the set at 16-16 with a block for Canisius, and Davis followed with a service ace to give Canisius a 17-16 lead. Foss hit a kill to tie the set at 17-17, then hit another kill to take an 18-17 lead. Marist led 21-20 when Schmid hit back to back kills to put the Red Foxes ahead by three, 23-20. The Red Foxes earned a match point at 24-21 on a Harridsleff kill, but Canisius fought back with a Good kill to make the score 24-22. Marist then got a Foss kill to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
The Red Foxes hit .239 for the match, holding Canisius to a .141 mark. Marist also held a 13-11 edge in blocks. Canisius had a 51-47 advantage in digs. Good led the Golden Griffins with 16 kills as Lettow added nine. Lettow also had a match-high 19 digs.
Marist closes out its three-match road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at Niagara.
