Marist Falls In Overtime At Canisius 2-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime at Canisius Friday night at Demske Sports Complex. The Red Foxes are now 7-7-2 for the season and 3-3-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Junior forward Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) scored the Red Foxes' lone goal in the match, his sixth goal of the season. The loss snaps Marist's four match unbeaten streak.

Canisius (4-10-2, 3-3 MAAC) threatened to score 14 minutes into the match as Sam Margetts put a shot on net off of a corner kick, but Marist goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) made the save. The Golden Griffins then earned another corner kick at the 14:16 mark. Sam Zarka's shot went wide and the match remained scoreless. The Red Foxes, however, took over from that point. Marist had three corner kicks over the next 11 minutes. Rob Bronski (Trumbull, Conn.) had two shots kept out of the net by Canisius keeper Luke Seymour in the 24th minute. The Red Foxes' also had a shot on goal by Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) get denied by Seymour.

Marist got on the board in the 35th minute, when Kevin Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) took a shot in the 44th minute that was blocked, and Marist took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Szabo and Touloumis each had chances 15 minutes into the second half to put Marist ahead 2-0, but Seymour made the saves to keep Canisius in the match. The Golden Griffins tied the match at 1-1 in the 63rd minute as Zarka sent a long pass to Jason Marks. Marks then put a cross into the 18-yard box to Margetts who chipped the ball past Pilla to even the match. Canisius threatened to take the lead in the 75th minute when a header by Alan McGreal hit a post. Brossard then gave the Red Foxes a chance for the lead four minutes later, but his shot was saved by Seymour. Pilla made a big save on a Marks shot in the 84th minute to keep the match tied at 1-1 and force extra time.

Marist had the first good scoring opportunity of the overtime, as a Szabo shot two minutes into the period was saved by Seymour. Touloumis then had a shot one minute later that went wide. Canisius then took its second shot of overtime 5:28 into the period and made it count. McGreal took control of a loose ball and put it past Pilla to give the Golden Griffins a 2-1 win.

Canisius had a slim 15-14 advantage in shots, taking 12 shots in the second half and overtime. Touloumis and Szabo each took three shots for Marist, while McGreal led Canisius with five shots. Seymour made seven saves for the Golden Griffins, while Pilla made three saves in the match.

Marist will close out its western New York road trip on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Niagara.
