LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - Marist junior Amy Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.) of the women's soccer team scored the lone goal in the Red Foxes' 1-0 win over the second-seeded Siena Saints in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. Classmate Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made two saves in goal for her second consecutive shutout in at the championship.
As a team the Marist (8-9-2) held a 7-6 advantage in shots, and a 4-3 edge in corners, including a 3-1 margin in the opening frame. Tillotson led the way with three shots, and her lone shot on goal found the back of the net.
Tillotson scored her fifth goal of the season, and second of the tournament in the 33rd minute as senior Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.) fed the ball across the box. Tillotson settled the ball and drove it past Siena goalkeeper Laura Ettinger from 8 yards out.
Defensively, the Marist back row has held each of its opponents scoreless thus far in the championships, and has contributed to five shutouts this season. Included in the Marist defense has been junior Lauren Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.), senior Teresa Ferraro (Floral Park, N.Y.), freshman Victoria Schmidt (Amityville, N.Y.).
The Red Foxes will continue play at the 2009 MAAC Championships on Sunday, Nov. 1 in the semifinal round against the sixth-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles at 1:30 p.m. The Red Foxes are 1-1 against Niagara in the MAAC Championships, and won the last matchup in the 2007 semifinal, 2-1.
