Marist Takes Down Manhattan In Four Sets

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Led by 16 kills apiece by Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) and Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.), the Marist volleyball team defeated Manhattan 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21) at the McCann Center Friday night. Marist hit .708 in the first set and hit .290 for the match.

Marist (10-8, 4-3 MAAC) and Manhattan (6-12, 2-5 MAAC) played to an 8-8 tie to open the match. The Red Foxes then broke the match open, as a block by Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) gave Marist a 9-8 lead. Marist then scored the next four points to take a 13-8 lead. Manhattan got as close as four at 14-10 on a service error, but Marist's hot hitting in the first set powered them to a 25-15 win. The Red Foxes had 18 kills with only one error in the set.

The second set started much like the first, with the two teams trading points to get to a 10-10 tie. Marist once again would go on a run, taking a 12-10 lead on a Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) service ace and a Manhattan error. The Lady Jaspers came back to tie the set at 12-12 with a Jaci Rahey kill and a solo block by Rita Welsh. After a Marist error tied the set at 14-14, Manhattan took advantage of a couple more Red Fox miscues to go ahead 16-14. The Red Foxes tied the set at 17-17 on a Lady Jaspers error, then got two Foss aces and a Schultze kill to go ahead 20-17. Marist went ahead 22-18 on a Schmid kill, but the Lady Jaspers would come back. A Diane Strutner ace highlighted a 3-0 run that got Manhattan within one at 22-21. After a Schultze kill made the score 23-21, the Lady Jaspers scored the next four points as a Rahey kill gave Manhattan a 25-23 win and evened the match at a set apiece.

Manhattan got off to a quick 7-4 lead to start the third set. Marist closed to within one at 8-7 on a Schultze kill. After a Red Fox error gave the Lady Jaspers an 11-9 lead, Manhattan grew its lead to four, 13-9, on a Strutner ace and a block by Rahey and Maddie Heck. A Manhattan error put the Red Foxes within three, 13-10. Marist then scored four straight points off of Schmid's serve to take a 14-13 lead. Manhattan tied the set at 14-14, but the Red Foxes got a kill from Harridsleff and a block by Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) to go ahead by three 17-14. The two teams traded points for the rest of the set, as a Schultze kill gave Marist a 25-22 lead and a two sets to one advantage.

Marist got out to a 6-4 lead to start the fourth set, getting kills from Schmid and Schultze as well as a block by Schmid and Harridsleff. The Red Foxes grew the lead to four at 9-5 on a Burton kill. Marist continued to roll and ended a 7-2 run with a Burton ace to take a 14-7 lead. The Red Foxes went ahead 15-8 on a Schmid kill, after which Manhattan went on a 4-0 run to get within three, 15-12. Marist got the lead back up to five at 19-14 on a Burton kill, and led 23-18 on a Schultze kill. Manhattan made one last run to get back in the set, as a Strutner kill sparked a three-point run to make the score 23-21. Harridsleff would give Marist the match win with back-to-back kills to give the Red Foxes a 25-21 win in the fourth and the match 3-1.

The Red Foxes hit .290 for the match, holding Manhattan to a .188 hitting mark. Marist held a 44-40 edge in digs, while the Lady Jaspers had an 11-5 advantage in blocks. Manhattan's Julie Bies led all players with 18 digs, while Marist's libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with 17. Strutner led Manhattan with 16 kills, as Rahee added 11 kills. Welsh had eight kills and a match-high seven blocks.

Marist will be on the road Sunday afternoon to take on Iona. First serve at the Hynes Center is set for 2 p.m.
