Second Half Comeback Powers Marist Past Bowling Green

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team shot 53.6% from the field in the second half of Saturday's game against Bowling Green at the McCann Center, erasing a 10-point deficit on its way to a 70-65 victory. The Red Foxes have now won its last 75 games in which they have scored at least 70 points. Senior forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led all players with 28 points and eight rebounds.

Junior guard Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) and sophomore guard Corielle Yarde (Leesport, Pa.) each scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds for Marist. Allenspach also had a game-high seven assists, while Yarde had two blocks.

Marist (2-1) scored the first two points of the game on a Fitz layup, but Bowling Green took over the first half early. A three-pointer by Tara Breske started a 15-2 run for the Falcons over a span of five minutes, giving Bowling Green a 15-4 lead. The Falcons also got triples from Tamika Nurse and Lauren Prochaska during that stretch. An Allenspach jumper ended the Bowling Green run and started a 7-0 run for the Red Foxes. A Fitz layup capped off the run, making the score 15-11 with 11:42 left in the half.

Bowling Green (1-2) went on another big run at the 11:30 mark. A Tracy Pontius three-pointer sparked a 13-5 Falcon run to give Bowling Green a 28-16 lead with 6:49 to go. Marist cut the lead to nine, 30-21, with 4:41 to go on a Fitz basket. Jen Uhl then made a three at the 3:35 mark to put the Falcons back up by 12, 33-21, with 3:35 left in the half. Uhl made two more threes to give Bowling Green its largest lead of the game, 39-23, with 2:28 to go in the half. Marist closed the half on a 6-0 run, getting baskets by Fitz and Kelsey Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) to make the score 39-29 at halftime.

The Red Foxes chipped away at Bowling Green's lead to start the second half, cutting it in half at the 14:55 mark when a Fitz jump shot made the score 46-41. After a Uhl layup made the score 50-45 with 13:09 to go, Marist went on a 7-0 run capped off by aYarde three-point play to take a 52-50 lead with 10:19 left in the game. The Falcons took the lead back at the 9:05 mark on a Pontius three-pointer, but Marist answered with a bucket by Allenspach to take at 54-53 lead with 8:43 to go.

Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) put Marist back in the lead with a layup at the 5:17 mark, making the score 60-58. The lead grew to five, 63-58, with 3:52 remaining with a Fitz free throw. Once again, the Falcons came back to tie the game. A Breske three-pointer and two Pontius free throws evened the score 63-63 with 2:15 to go. With the score tied at 65-65 with 1:00 to go, Allenspach made a running layup in the lane to give Marist a 67-65 lead. The Red Foxes made three free throws down the stretch to make the final score 70-65.

Marist shot 50% from the field for the game, bolstered by making high-percentage shots in the lane. The Red Foxes dominated the paint, outscoring Bowling Green 32-8 in the lane. The Falcons shot 34.5% from the field, but only 25.9% in the second half. The Falcons held a 35-33 rebounding edge, but committed 16 turnovers. Marist had 17 assists to 14 turnovers in the game. Breske led the Falcons with 16 points, while Pontius and Uhl each had 13.

Marist will next take to the court on Friday, Nov. 27 when it takes on Oklahoma State at the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas. The trip marks the first international road trip in program history. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
