POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 88-72 loss to Boston University in its home opener on Saturday. Freshman guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) paced three Red Foxes in double digits with 15 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range.
Marist's three leading scorers were all freshmen, as forward Rob Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) scored 13 points, and guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) added a career-high 12 to go along with two assists and two steals.
Boston University shot .561 from the field and .600 from three-point range, hitting 15 three-pointers in 25 attempts. The Terriers hit 11 threes in the first half as they jumped out to a 49-34 halftime lead. BU's Corey Lowe led all scorers with 27, going 10-for-18 from the field and 7-for-10 from three-point range to go along with seven assists and six rebounds.
In all, the Terriers had four double-digit scorers. John Holland added 21 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists while shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Tyler Morris, who shot 4-for-6 from three-point range, added 14. Jake O'Brien scored 10 to go along with game highs of 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Three-pointers by Rusin and red-shirt junior guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) gave the Red Foxes a 6-2 lead just 1:16 into the contest. Boston University immediately answered with a 10-0 run. Marist cut its deficit to 15-13 on a three-pointer by Price with 13:19 left in the first half, but the Terriers answered with a 7-0 spurt of their own and never led by less than seven after that.
The Red Foxes never cut Boston University's lead under 15 points in the second half. The Terriers' largest lead was 22.
Marist fell to 0-7. Boston University, the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference, fell to 4-6.
After an eight-day layoff due to final exams, the Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 20 when they host Binghamton, also of the America East Conference.
