BOSTON, MASS. - Led by a career-high 32 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore guard Corielle Yarde (Leesport, Pa.), the Marist women's basketball team got an 81-73 win over the Boston University Terriers at Case Gym on Saturday. Yarde made 11-of-17 shots from the field, including five three-pointers, and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. This is Yarde's first career double-double.
Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored 15 points on Saturday, making 6-of-13 shots from the field. She also had five rebounds and three steals. Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) scored 10 points off the bench, eight of which came in the second half. For the second straight game, Kate Oliver (Sydney, Australia) tied her career-high with eight points.
Marist (5-4) started the game with a 5-3 lead on a Fitz basket and Yarde three-pointer. After Alex Young scored five straight points to give Boston University an 8-5 lead, Yarde went on a 10-0 run all by herself to give the Red Foxes a 15-8 lead with 15:31 to go in the first half. Marist grew the lead to eight, 22-14, with 13:24 to go in the half on an Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) three-pointer. The Terriers came back with an 8-2 run capped off by an Aly Hinton triple to make the score 24-22 with 11:47 to go.
Boston University (3-6) then cut the lead to one, 26-25, with a Chantel Alford three-point play at the 10:50 mark, then tied the game 28-28 with a Caitlynn Moran three-pointer. The Terriers took their first lead of the game with 8:07 to go on a Moran jumper. The Red Foxes took the lead back on a 7-0 run kickstarted by a Fitz three, going ahead 35-30 with 5:56 remaining in the half. The lead went back up to six with 2:15 left in the first, when a Yarde layup made the score 40-34. The Terriers cut the lead to one by halftime, as a Hinton jumper and Young triple made the score 40-39.
The two teams traded baskets and the lead to start the second half, with BU taking a 46-45 lead with 18:35 to go on an Alford three-point play. Marist took the lead back at the 17:15 mark on a Yarde layup, making the score 47-46. The Red Foxes got the lead up to five with 14:58 to go, when Yarde made a three and was fouled on the play. Her free throw made the score 55-50. Marist went ahead 59-53 on an Allenspach basket, but the Terriers would come back. BU went on an 8-0 run, capped off by a Hinton triple to give the Terriers a 61-59 lead with 8:14 to go.
Marist took the lead back one minute later when Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) made a three-pointer to make the score 62-61. Yarde then made a three of her own to put the Red Foxes up by four, 65-61, with 5:44 to go. The Terriers tied the game at 65-65 with 4:52 to go on a pair of Young foul shots, and took the lead 69-68 on a pair of Hinton free throws. Johnson gave Marist the lead 71-69 with her first three of the game. She then made another basket with 2:09 left to make the score 73-69. Yarde put away the game with a put-back layup with 1:16 to go, making the score 75-69. The Terriers would only get as close as five the rest of the way, as Marist went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to make the final score 81-73.
The Red Foxes shot 43.9% from the field for the game, making 11-of-23 three-pointers. They were also 12-for-13 from the free throw line. The Terriers shot 42.6% from the line, but after making their first six three-pointers shot only 36% from beyond the arc. Marist outrebounded BU 36-35 and forced 23 turnovers. Moran led the Terriers with 20 points, as Alford added 18 points, five assists, and five blocks.
Marist will next be in action on Saturday, Dec. 19 when it hosts Hartford at the McCann Center.
