LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 55-51 loss at Rider in a hard-fought Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday. Freshman guard Sam Prescott (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high 14 points, and red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba (Cergy, France) finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

After Prescott opened the scoring with a basket at the 18:12 mark, Rider answered by going on a 10-0 run. The Red Foxes scored the next four points, but the Broncs answered with a 7-0 run of their own to go up 17-6 with 9:40 left until halftime. The 11-point lead would be Rider's largest of the game.

A pair of free throws by freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) cut Rider's lead to 21-15 going into halftime. The Broncs built their lead up to 10 on a three-pointer by Justin Robinson with 17:59 remaining, but the Red Foxes tied the score at 37 apiece with 8:47 to play on a basket by Kaba.

After nearly three minutes of scoreless basketball, a jumper by Novar Gadson gave Rider a 39-37 advantage with 5:55 to go, but Prescott answered on the ensuing possession with a basket off his own offensive rebound with 5:17 to play.

However, Rider went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:36, with Gadson and Jhamar Youngblood scoring four points apiece.

A pair of baskets by red-shirt junior guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) cut Rider's lead to 47-43 with 45 seconds to go. After Youngblood split a pair of free throws, a three-pointer by Prescott brought the Red Foxes to within 48-46 with 32 seconds to go.

Robinson put Rider back up by four with a pair of free throws, but Goodwin answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to make the score 50-49 with 20 seconds left. Two free throws by Youngblood gave the Broncs a 52-49 lead, but a layup by Kaba sliced the lead back to one with 12 seconds left.

Rider's Ryan Thompson split a pair of free throws to put the Broncs up by two. The Red Foxes came down with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Kaba's 18-footer missed with four seconds to play. Robinson then iced the game with a pair of free throws.

Goodwin finished with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting. Red-shirt freshman forward Dorvell Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with career highs of six points, eight rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes.

For Rider, Robinson had a game-high 18 points. He shot 5-for-10 from the field, 4-for-6 from three-point range and 4-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line. He also had three assists against just one turnover. Gadson had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Youngblook scored 12. The Red Foxes held Ryan Thompson, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, to just one point.

Marist held a 44-38 rebounding edge, and held Rider to just .311 shooting (19-for-61) from the field. The Red Foxes shot .382 (21-for-55) from the field, but hit 50 percent (16-for-32) of the field-goal attempts in the second half.

Marist fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC; Rider improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

After playing their first six games on the road, the Red Foxes will play at home for the first time this season on Saturday, when they host Boston University in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
