ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team shot only 26.1% from the field in the second half and could not cut into a six-point halftime deficit, losing at St. Bonaventure 61-43. The Red Foxes' 43 points are a season-low and the lowest since the last time these two teams met last season when they scored 48 points in a win at the McCann Center. Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led Marist with 13 points.
Fitz is now four points away from 2,000 points in her career. She also had four rebounds in the game. Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) led the Red Foxes in rebounds, pulling down six rebounds.
St. Bonaventure (8-0) got out to a hot start in the game, as Megan Van Tatenhove and Dana Mitchell each made its first two shots from the field to give the Bonnies an 8-2 lead with 14:44 left in the first half. The Bonnies led 10-2 when Fitz went on a 5-0 run on her own to get Marist within three, 10-7, with 12:14 to go in the half. After baskets by Mitchell and Armelia Horton put St. Bonaventure ahead 14-8, Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) made a fast break layup to start a 9-2 run for the Red Foxes. Yarde made a three during the run, as Fitz scored four points including a basket at the 6:49 mark that gave Marist a 17-16 lead.
Yarde then made a layup on the baseline at the 6:07 mark to put the Red Foxes ahead 19-16. Mitchell then made a pair of free throws for Saint Bonaventure to get them within one at the 5:26 mark, and an Amanda Jenkins three-pointer put the Bonnies ahead 21-19 with 4:09 left in the half. That three was the St. Bonaventure's only long-range field goal of the half, making only 1-of-7. The Bonnies led 23-19 when Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) made a running jumper on the baseline to get Marist within two, 23-21, with 3:12 left in the half. Those points would be the last for the Red Foxes in the half, as Mitchell and Van Tatenhove scored the last four points of the half to put St. Bonaventure ahead 27-21 at halftime.
Marist (4-3) cut St. Bonaventure's lead to four with 16:02 to go on a Kristine Best (Commack, N.Y.) three-pointer, making the score 33-29. Jenkins responded with a three of her own to put the lead back at seven, 36-29, with 15:42 to go. Van Tatenhove then made back-to-back baskets to give the Bonnies their first double-digit lead of the game, 40-29, with 13:41 to go. Marist got baskets from Fitz and Johnson to get within eight, 42-34, with 10:07 to go. That would be as close as the Red Foxes would get on this day. Chelsea Bowker hit consecutive threes to put the Bonnies ahead by 14, 48-34, with 8:50 to go that put the game away. St. Bonaventure would go up by as much as 18 late in the game, winning 61-43.
The Red Foxes shot 31.9% from the field, and only 26.1% in the second half. St. Bonaventure shot 44.9% in the game and 52.4% from the field in the second half. The Bonnies also held a 34-25 rebound advantage. Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jenkins added 13 points as Van Tatenhove had 12 points and six rebounds.
